New Years Eve 12-31-12
We had a little get-together with Richard's parents, Gina's family, and Trish's family for New Year's Eve. The adults enjoyed drinks and appetizers while the kids played Wii and had fun with the photobooth that Caren created for them. Trish had to leave early because her in-laws were waiting for them, but the rest of us counted down the new year with the Ryan Seacrest on east coast time. After Gina's family left, we stayed up to ring in the west coast new year with Carson Daly. Cecily made it all the way until 12:30!

California Adventure 12-30-12
Grandma Lynn and Grandpa Otto headed to California Adventure to check out the new Carsland, and they took Cecily with them. They got to see all the lovely Christmas decorations there as well. They rode a few rides, saw a show, had soup with bread bowls for lunch, sampled the new Ghiradelli chocolate from the factory that replaced the Tortilla place, then they got caught in a downpour. So they made it a short day and headed back to our house.

Second Christmas 12-28-12
Cecily got to open more presents today from us and from Grandma Lynn and Grandpa Otto once they arrived. She was sad to hear her cousins weren't coming out yet, but she was very happy to see Grandma Lynn & Grandpa Otto.

Merry Christmas 12-25-12
Merry Christmas! We spent the night up in Pasadena to be with Caren's family. We were hoping Santa would run into the Tooth Fairy since Cecily had a really loose tooth, but it didn't come out. Caren made snowman bananas for breakfast since she didn't want to go searching for an open donut shop. Cecily loved opening presents with Brendan and taking her new rollerblades from Grandma and Papa for a spin in the backyard. Cecily played with her new science set with Daddy, and she played some Christmas carols on the piano for Aunt Cindy. Then we headed home so Cecily could open up the rest of her Santa gifts. Cecily was super excited to get a nice big boogie board and her very own laptop. Cecily's dog Butterscotch even got a matching mini friend, Cookie, in Cecily's stocking. Now, Cecily can't wait for her cousins to come out and celebrate Christmas with them.

Christmas Eve 12-24-12
On Christmas Eve, we set up our stockings while Cecily left out milk and gingerbread cookies on the gingerbread plate she made at Hidden Talents for Santa at our house. Then we headed up to Pasadena to spend the night with Caren's family. Cecily set out more milk and a gingerbread girl and candy cane cookie for Santa. She wanted to make sure he had treats when he stopped at both our house as well as Grandma and Papa's house to leave her presents.

Pelican Pride 12-21-12
Cecily was so excited to get the Pelican Pride Award for her class in December. She got this award in December two years ago in her first grade class with Mrs. Ashley, but it had rained so she had gotten her award in the front office. This time, she got to experience the full award by getting it in front of the whole school out on the black top. Since Richard had the day off, he was able to come see Cecily get her award. It also happened to be Pajama Day at school, so Cecily and Katelyn matched their pajamas pants (Cecily had given her the pajama pants for her birthday a couple weeks ago). We are so proud of Cecily for working hard in school and getting the Pelican Pride Award!

School Winter Party 12-20-12
Cecily's class had their Winter Party today (one kid is a Jehovah's Witness, so we just did a celebration of winter). Caren purchased all the supplies and prepped all the crafts. She planned four stations: picture snowball ornaments, snowman face wreaths, handprint snowflake bags, and snowman donuts. The kids really enjoyed all the activities, and they even got to hear some Christmas caroling. They ate pizza, veggies, and snowballs (cheese puffs) for lunch. The parents really helped in donating money, supplies, and their time volunteering at the party.

Miss California 12-19-12
Cecily's Girl Scout Brownie troop took a field trip to Earth Friendly Products. They had a yummy holiday luncheon before meeting Miss California, Leah Cecil. She talked about pageants, and then played her harp. Then the girls got to make a recycled ornament craft before getting their pictures taken with Miss California. She even autographed some pictures for the girls. Now, we can't wait to watch the Miss America pageant in January to see how Miss California does.

(Finally got the pictures for this field trip from the professional photographer that was there.)

We also got to be part of a YouTube video for Miss California:

Christmas Tree 12-18-12
Since we are home for Christmas this year, we decided to get a real tree. Elf Richard and Elf Cecily helped to pick out a nice full tree at Home Depot. Of course it happened to be super windy and freezing cold out. But we made it home with a nice tree with a lovely scent. We have missed the smell of real Christmas trees, but not all the needles that fell on our floor. Cecily can't wait to put up more decorations this weekend.

Cookie Exchange 12-16-12
Gina had her annual Christmas cookie exchange today in the rain. Cecily was a great helper getting the cookie dough ready last night. Today, Caren baked two different cookies: chocolate Nutella cookies (which she was going to make into reindeer, but gave up) and sugar cookie candy canes. There was a good variety of cookies (which Richard enjoyed when the girls brought them home), and the kids had a blast playing in the rain on the playground. We had a lovely surprise as Brandy made a short appearance in between visiting her family while she was out in California for the weekend.

Din Tai Fung 12-14-12
Kelly and Alexsia took a trip to Taiwan in 2010 and were introduced to the Din Tai Fung Dumpling House. Kelly was excited to learn that there was one in Arcadia. We had always talked about going, and finally after two years, we took our trip up to Din Tai Fung in Arcadia after school for dinner. The girls loved the dumplings! Before heading back down, Caren drove them around to see the Christmas lights on St. Albans in San Marino and the many streets in Hastings Ranch.

Holiday Boat Parade Party 12-09-12
This year, our annual holiday boat parade party at the Hanks home was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed. Cecily got her picture taken with Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa. Too bad they didn't play the Oompa Loompa song.
Willy Wonka had a little magic show for the kids, and then he painted their faces. Cecily got a cute little snowman on her cheek.
After dinner we headed over to Van's house to watch the boat parade. For dessert, they had a chocolate fountain with yummy things to dip.
Once the boat parade was over, we got to take a little cruise around the harbour on Van's boat. The party was fabulous as usual. Already looking forward to next year's party.

Brendan's & Katelyn's Birthday Parties 12-08-12
We started off the day with a quick trip to Lowe's to build a wooden gingerbread house with Cecily's friends Danielle, Renee, Ted, and Isobel. Then we headed up to Griffith Park to celebrate Brendan's 2nd birthday at Travel Town. Caren and Cecily had been there before, so Cecily enjoyed showing Richard all the trains. Caren loved the mini Krispy Kreme donuts that Cindy and Allen had bought. Cecily went on the little train with Brendan before we sang happy birthday and headed back to Huntington Beach for our next party.
http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8UbNGrdw3VOxQ
We were three hours late to Katelyn's 9th birthday party because Brendan's party was the same time, but we didn't miss anything. Richard dropped us off since parking on Humboldt was non-existent due to the upcoming boat parade. Cecily had a blast with the girls in the photo booth and playing on Katelyn's boat parked at their dock while Caren enjoyed the yummy food which included spring rolls, ox tail soup, bbq lamb chops, and enormous crab legs. Cecily later also had some delicious bbq steak. We were supposed to go to a third party at Ava's house to watch the boat parade, but we never made it. It was a long, but fun day.

Baskets & Brownies 12-05-12
Cecily's third grade class had a very fun assembly today. A Native American came in and taught them how to weave baskets. Each kid got to weave their own baskets with the help of the parent volunteers. The kids loved the hands-on learning.

After school, we had our Brownie Girl Scout meeting. Our troop is helping the Harbour View Student Council with the holiday gift tree for Harbour View families in need. The girls helped write out the "ornament" tags that people can take to purchase gifts. The girls loved being able to help Harbour View.

Happy Birthday Richard 12-02-12
Happy Birthday, Richard! Richard had been so swamped at work that he just wanted a lazy Sunday. We went out to breakfast at Jon's, and then he got to enjoy football the rest of the day.

Legoland 12-01-12
We started off the day with a quick stop at Home Depot so Cecily could make a picture frame. They happened to have a Santa there too for a photo op. Then we headed down to Legoland to check out their holiday stuff. This was the first year Richard got to see the snow and the new holiday fun area. It was also nice to see the holiday nights after dark since Legoland usually closes before it gets dark.

Soccer Party 11-29-12
We had our end of the season soccer party tonight at Lamppost Pizza. Caren cut up the banner so each girl could have their name & number. She added a posed picture, an action shot picture, and a ribbon so the girls can hang it on their walls at home. The girls also got a cute bee Beanie Boo, some jewels to make a black and yellow bracelet, a Twinkie bee, and their trophies. The coaches got a tub with a soccer notebook, water bottle, signed picture from the girls, and a $50 gift card to California Pizza Kitchen (with our first assistant coach getting a tub with a soccer notebook and a $5 gift card to Starbucks). Everyone loved their gifts.

Athena's Birthday Party 11-28-12
Happy 8th Birthday, Athena! We celebrated by painting pottery at Hidden Talents. Cecily picked out a gingerbread man plate to use for cookies for Santa. She did a great job, and Caren didn't even have to help. Cecily can't wait to see her gingerbread plate when it's all finished.

Cotillion 11-27-12
Cecily was asked to be in an informal photoshoot/commercial for our friend's company, Earth Friendly Products, so she had her picture taken along with Emily and Alexsia after school today. Alexsia's uncle, Bill Cosby, is going to be the voiceover for the commercial. Can't wait to see the finished product! In the evening, we had our Holiday Cotillion. The Seacliff Country Club had beautiful Christmas decorations up, and the kids enjoyed an ice cream sundae instead of their usual cookie and juice. After Cotillion, we went to dinner at Buon Gusto with Shari, Scarlett, and Presley. And of course, we couldn't forget about Cecily's dessert: three scoops of ice cream from Baskin Robbins. Next cotillion it will be four scoops!

Happy Thanksgiving 11-22-12
Happy Thanksgiving! In the morning, we tried taking some pictures to use for our Christmas cards. Then, we were invited to celebrate Thanksgiving at the Peck's. Cecily had fun playing with Nicolette and Olivia, while the adults enjoyed watching football. Bridgette made a delicious Thanksgiving feast that could have fed 20 people. It was a fun and relaxing day.

Duffy 11-18-12
Caren and Cecily were invited for a boat ride in Huntington Harbour in their friend's brand new Duffy boat. The Duffy is an electric boat, and no one else seemed to be out on the water, so our ride in the harbour was very peaceful and relaxing. Caren even got to drive the boat!

Caren's Birthday 11-15-12
Happy Birthday, Caren! Since Richard had to work late on Caren's actual birthday, we went out to celebrate the next day. We had a delicious dinner at Gulliver's. It had a similar vibe to Five Crowns, and the food was delicious.

Special Person Day 11-14-12
Today was Harbour View's annual Special Person Day. Grandma and Papa came to watch the special performances and see Cecily's classroom. The third graders sang "Proud to Be An American" with arm movements. We had lunch at Red Table and dinner at Don Ramon's to support Harbour View (both restaurants donated a portion of the sales to our school).

New York Trip
Cecily and Caren headed to New York for the long weekend to visit Brandy, Tomi, Jack, and Eric. Timing was kind of bad since the Sandy Hurricane had blown through the previous weekend, and it had snowed a couple days earlier. However, after arriving at 5:30 in the morning (New York time), the damage had been relatively cleaned up, and the weather was relatively nice. We grabbed Dunkin Donuts for Tomi's birthday breakfast then headed to the farm to check out the animals while Brandy and Eric mucked the stalls and fed the animals. Caren got to feed an alpaca, and Cecily found an egg in the hen house to bring back to Brandy's house. After the farm, the girls headed to Main Street Northport so that Cecily and Tomi could play on the playground and to grab some lunch. We ended the night with authentic New York pizza. When we got back to their house after dinner, Cecily gave Tomi her Hello Kitty themed birthday presents, and the kids had a fun slumber party to celebrate Tomi's 8th birthday. 11-10-12

On Sunday, we headed into New York City to see the sites. Unfortunately, as soon as they got on the train, Caren realized she forgot her Canon camera. We still had four cameras though (two phones and two Olympus for the kids), so we were able to take lots of pictures (just not the good quality that Caren would have liked). It was nice not to have to carry a big camera around the city all day though. We started our marathon trip arriving in Penn Station and taking the subway down to the 9/11 memorial building then walking past Wall Street and the bull. We grabbed the girls some pretzels from a street vendor before taking the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. We hopped back on the subway and grabbed Subway for lunch before heading into Central Park. We walked through the zoo, passed the Shakespeare statue, saw the Boathouse, saw the Carousel, and watched the horse drawn carriages go by. Caren even got a shot of her feet in flip flops on snow in Central Park. Next we headed to FAO Schwarz and the American Girl Store for some shopping. On our way to Rockefellar Center, we saw the Empire State Building all lit up in red, white, and blue. At Rockelfeller Center, we watched the ice skaters before checking out the Lego Store. Then we walked by the NBC Studio and Radio City Music Hall on our way to Times Square. We grabbed the kids Happy Meals at the Times Square McDonalds on the way back to Penn Station. When we passed the Annie theater on Broadway, Cecily asked if we could see the show. Unfortunately we didn't have time to catch a Broadway show. We'll have to make another trip back to see one. 11-11-12

Caren had gotten Tomi and Cecily matching American Girl New York shirts for their American Girl dolls and dog Statue of Liberty costumes. Since Jack didn't get to come into the city with us, Caren bought him and Cecily matching Statue of Liberty magnets and an exclusive New York yellow taxi cab building set. At FAO Schwarz, Cecily had purchased a fancy nail polish set with the money that Grandma had given her, so the kids all gave themselves a pedicure. We grabbed deli fried egg sandwiches and headed to Hobart Beach for a picnic. We got to see s ship washed up on shore from the hurricane. The weather was so nice, Tomi and Cecily ended up in their tank tops. The kids had fun on the playground and exploring the beach. That night, we had a Sperber-Sandin Thanksgiving. 11-12-12

Our last day in Northport, we hung out at their house then went to lunch before heading to the airport. We finally saw the beautiful changing fall colors on the trees at the Sweet Mamas parking lot. While Caren enjoyed seeing New York City, she preferred Northport over the city. Cecily loved going to New York and visiting Tomi and Jack. 11-13-12

Brownie Food Closet 11-07-12
Our Brownie troop visited the Food Closet at the Community United Methodist Church, and we brought our donations of food, candy, and bags. We had gone there once before when the girls were Daisies. It was nice for them to go back and re-learn about helping the less fortunate. The girls enjoyed packing bags of food for their monthly distribution as well as smaller bags of "lunch."

Emily's Birthday Party 11-04-12
Happy 8th Birthday, Emily! We helped her celebrate at her bowling party. The kids had a great time bowling, eating pizza as well as Dippin Dots, and wearing their new mustache necklaces that they got in their goodie bags.
